  • Highlights

    Madrid is Spain's capital and largest city, with almost 4 million inhabitants. It was named capital in 1562, a new city by Spain's standards. What Madrid lacks in ancient history and medieval architecture, however, it makes up in a plethora of other ways. Spain's capital offers some of the best museums in the world, the craziest nightlife in Europe and various distinct, hip neighborhoods, each with its own special character and something different to offer.

    Even though Madrid is a huge urban metropolis, it has a high ratio of green to concrete, with enormous parks such as the "Retiro," "Parque del Oeste" and "Casa del Campo." Join the raucous Sunday afternoon drums circles at the Retiro, or visit the close by Prado museum, which holds the most important works of El Greco, Velázquez, Goya and much more. Art enthusiasts will drool as well over the collections at the modern art museum, the Reina Sofia, home to a plethora of works by Picasso, Dalí and Miró.

    Madrid is conveniently located in the center of the peninsula, with ski slopes an hour away and any Spanish destination at no more than a 6-hour ride. It's a great jump-off point for traveling, but you might not want to leave when you start attending football games, concerts, the theater, bullfights, and take to the streets drinking on terraces and partying 'til the sun comes up. Come to learn the Spanish language in Madrid and join in the fun... you'll consider yourself a true "madrileño" in no time.

    Madrid Cultural Activities

    As the capital city of Spain, Madrid has a lifetime of activities to offer. We send our students on their way by organizing daily afternoon activities to discover the culture that surrounds them, like:

    * Walking tours (Bourbon Madrid, Hapsburg Madrid, Modern Madrid...)
    * Museum visits (Prado, Reina Sofia, Archeological, Fine Arts...)
    * Royal Palace
    * Retiro Park

    Weekend Excursions from Madrid

    Madrid's location smack in the middle of the Iberian Peninsula means that no Spanish city is more than an 8 hour drive away. You can sign up for a variety of weekend excursions. The most frequent trips from our Spanish school in Madrid include:

    * Toledo
    * Segovia
    * El Escorial
    * Ávila
    * Sevilla
    * Granada
    * Costa del Sol
