  • Description

Salamanca is an ancient Spanish city of about 160,000 inhabitants and the location of one of the oldest most prestigious universities in Europe. Emory offers a semester-based program with the following features: intensive Spanish language and culture courses, selective courses taught in English (Political Science, Economics, Psychology, Anthropology), Health Sciences track (Medical Spanish, Comparative Healthcare Seminar), advanced-level Spanish seminars, and extensive excursions.

Students with advanced language skills take most of their courses in Spanish and have the opportunity to take a wider range of courses. Students with little language preparation can take appropriate Spanish language courses and some other courses in English.

Students will take 4 courses and earn 16 credit hours. Students may also enroll in regular university courses in disciplines such as History, Literature, Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Political Science, and Economics. Students who take regular university courses are assigned a tutor who meets with them two hours weekly to review course material and answer questions.

  • Highlights

The program is based in Salamanca, centrally located in Spain, just two hours west from Madrid, Spain's capital, and close to Portugal. This strategic centric situation is useful in order to organize the extensive fieldtrips included in the Program: Seville, Barcelona, Valencia, Galicia, Madrid.

Students attend the Universidad de Salamanca, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe, founded in the 13th century, with worldwide reputation in Spanish language teaching and Hispanic studies. The Universidad de Salamanca holds a population of 40,000 students, which include local Spanish and European students. This flow of students makes Salamanca a very young city devoted completely to students, with a wide offer of regular cultural activities (theater, concerts, art exhibitions, local celebrations) and a unique and lively nightlife. In contrast to other bigger cities in Europe, Salamanca University environment offers a safe and comfortable place to study, as well as a variety of cultural activities at a reasonable cost.
