  • Description

Students engage in a unique opportunity to study NBB in Paris; the faculty and students on the program will connect the rich history of French neurology with contemporary neuroscience research. Students will couple in-class discussions with a variety of extracurricular outings to locations that illustrate France's role in early Neurology (e.g. Hopital de la Salpetriere) and its current research interests (e.g. Institut Curie or La Cite des Sciences). In addition, students will have access to the food, culture and art of Paris, including visits to Versailles and Giverny and museum passes for the Parisian museums as a part of the program.

Gain a historical perspective on modern Neuroscience by learning about the early French pioneers in the field and the places they worked. Classroom instruction will be conducted three hours a day for four days as week (Monday-Thursday) at the Accent facility in Paris, with excursions planned for some afternoons and Fridays.

NBB 401S: Topics in Neuroscience and Behavior

    Prerequisites (3): BIOL 141 & 142, CHEM 141 & 142, NBB201 or NBB301 or approved upper-level biology course
**Note: This offering of NBB401 has been approved as a BIOL elective for BIOL Majors, but it does NOT fulfill the College GER writing requirement.

Description: The course will focus on current French neuroscience by examining "primary literature" published by French neuroscientists. Students will examine data put forth by French investigators and discuss the findings from different perspectives that reflect levels of neuroscientific inquiry. The topics can vary, but a selection of classes will be devoted to special topics especially suited to study in Paris, such as sensory perception or the impact of nationalized healthcare on basic scientific research.

    NBB 370: CSI: PARIS by

    Prerequisites(3): BIOL 141 & 142, CHEM 141 & 142, NBB201 or NBB301 or approved upper-level NBB course.

Description: Want to learn about evidence based detective work and physical examination to solve the most difficult of neurological cases in 19th century Paris? Tune in to CSI: Paris where Jean-Martin Charcot's Salpetriere Investigations and lectures provided the foundation for the development of modern clinical neurology in France and the rest of Europe.

How did the pioneering work of the "French School" in the nineteenth century help define neurological disorders and lead to our present understanding of pathophysiology and clinical best practices? How 21st century molecular neurobiology providing hope for new treatments to the neurological disorders seen in Charcot's clinics over one hundred years ago? In this course we will examine Parkinson's disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Narcolepsy from both Charcot and colleagues' perspective and our current understanding.

Eligibility Requirements: Minimum 3.0 GPA; good academic standing; at least 18 years of age; completion of a full year of college; and currently enrolled in a college/university. Please note: NO French Language Proficiency is Required.
