    Learn about modern Latin American urban cultures in Buenos Aires, one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse centers in South America. The program provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary focus on Latin America and Argentinean contemporary literature, music, visual arts, and politics. In addition, the program creates the the opportunity for students to understand the specifics of Spanish - American societies within a rigorous academic setting. Goals will be met through classroom instruction, independent research projects, cultural and intensive reading and research. Accommodations are provided in local homestays.

    Program participants take two courses for a total of eight Emory credit hours.

    * SPAN 309/LACS 385: Modern Latin American Literature and Culture
    Description: Peronism: Politics, Culture and Society (1945-2009). 4 credit hours

    Taught by Prof. Valeria Manzano, SPAN 309, "Peronism and Politics: The Argentine Riddle" is a course focused on the many lives of Peronism throughout Argentine history. Based on literary and historical texts, this course exposes students to one of the most complex manifestations of Latin American politics. Students will learn about the social and economical conditions that made possible the emergence of Juan Domingo Peron and his wife Eva in the political arena of the 1940s, and they will also study how these two commanding figures irrevocably shaped the social and political makeup of Argentine culture until today. The content of the course will be complemented by guided tours to the Eva Peron museum and various other sites of relevance for Peronism and its rich history.

    * SPAN 460/LACS 490: Modern Latin American Literature and Culture
    Description: Buenos Aires: Past and Present. 4 credit hours.

    Taught by Prof. Hernan Feldman, SPAN 460, "Buenos Aires: Past and Present" is a course focused in the history and culture of Buenos Aires, one of the most cosmopolitan cities of Latin America. This course examines the many narratives that brought about an intriguing melting pot in which various races and cultures overlapped. Not only are students exposed to a wide array of texts dealing with the past and present of the city; they are also immersed in local culture by participating in various urban guided explorations whose topics range from tango music and theatre to football and architecture. Students will also be encouraged to contrast their day-to-day experiences in the city with the cultural production they study in the classroom.

    Eligibility Requirements: A minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average and at least five semesters of college-level Spanish or equivalent. Good academic standing; at least 18 years of age; completion of a full year of college; and currently enrolled at Emory.

    Application Deadline: The deadline for receipt of applications is March 1. CIPA encourages students to submit their applications as early as possible because some programs fill up by the end of January.

    Acceptance Process: This program is accepting applications on a rolling basis. Students will be notified with results within two weeks after submitting their completed application.

    Living Arrangements: Accommodations are provided in local home-stays.

    Cost includes an academic fee and a program fee for room, partial board, and insurance. This total includes eight semester hours, health and accident insurance (duration of program), accommodations in homestays, some meals, class and group field trips, and transportation trips.
