Academic Focus: Chinese Studies: Language, Culture, and the Arts
Program Information: The Emory Summer Chinese Program, offered through the Department of Russian, and East Asian Languages and Cultures, provides students an exciting opportunity to study Chinese language, culture, and the arts in Beijing, China's fascinating capital and site of the 2008 Olympic Games. The program collaborates with the prestigious Beijing Normal University, offering courses on Chinese language at all levels and a course on traditional Chinese architectural and ritual spaces taught in English.
No Knowledge of Mandarin Chinese is required, as beginner students learn practical Mandarin Chinese. Special tutorials will be arranged for heritage speakers of Chinese and for students with two or more years of Chinese. Participants will tour the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and the Forbidden City, and see acrobatic and martial arts performances. In addition to excursions to numerous cultural sites in Beijing, a visit to the former imperial palaces in Chengde, Kaifeng and Luoyang and the famous Shaolin Temple are planned.
Courses: Participants take two courses for a total of 8 Emory credit hours. Summer program credits can be used to satisfy Chinese major and minor requirements.
* CHN 105: Language and Culture of Northwest China
Description: 4 credit hours
NOTE:This course can fulfill half of the Emory College Language Requirement.
In this course, students learn practical Mandarin Chinese needed for living in China, and they practice their language skills in natural settings. There will be two sections of language classes: one for beginners and the other for students with one or two years of training in Chinese. Special tutorial sessions will be arranged for advanced heritage speakers of Chinese and for students with more than two years of Chinese. In addition to language instruction, a series of lectures on various aspects of Chinese culture is planned.
* CHN 273/ASIA 273: Heritage of China
Description: 4 credit hours
Taught in English, this course introduces China's cultural heritage in the classroom and on site at imperial precincts. Focusing on Chinese traditional culture studies in its geographical, historical, philosophical, linguistic, literary, and artistic context this course will provide an introduction to key features of traditional Chinese society, culture and the arts and offer unique opportunity to study traditional China at original locations.
Academic Focus: This program is open to all majors, but may be particularly suitable to students with academic interests in Chinese Studies (Chinese language, culture, and the arts).
Eligibility Requirements: Minimum 2.0 GPA; good academic standing; at least 18 years of age; completion of a full year of college; and currently enrolled at a college/university.
Application Deadline: The deadline for receipt of applications is March 1. CIPA encourages students to submit their applications as early as possible because some programs fill up by the end of January.
Acceptance Process: This program is accepting applications on a rolling basis. Students will be notified with results within two weeks after submitting their completed application.
Living Arrangements: Accommodations are at Liyun Xueyuan on the campus of Beijing Normal University. Two students will share a room or a two-room suite.

Cost includes an academic fee and a program fee for room, board, and insurance. This total includes eight semester hours, health and accident insurance (duration of program), accommodations in residence halls, three meals a day, excursion expenses in Beijing, and transportation to other locations in China.
