This program provides students with the opportunity to explore the unique fauna of Australia, as well as the country's past and ongoing struggle with invasive species. This program is suggested for Biology majors. Field experience enhances classroom instruction at James Cook University in Townsville, Queensland. During the third week of the course, students take a weeklong field excursion to sites near Cairns. Field sites include the Great Barrier Reef, Magnetic Island, and the Daintree National Forest.
Emory University has offered high-quality summer study abroad experiences around the world for nearly forty years. These popular programs provide opportunities for you to study aspects of another country's culture and society in disciplines spanning the social sciences, the sciences, and the humanities. Emory's summer study abroad programs are planned and directed by Emory faculty, and generally the courses are also taught by Emory faculty. The courses are designed to take full advantage of the overseas setting in which they take place.
Courses: All program participants take a total of eight Emory credit hours.
* BIO 223: Developmental Biology 4 credit hours
This course studies the fundamental principles that govern vertebrate and invertebrate development at the cellular, molecular and organismal level.
* BIO/ENVS 349: Ecology of Invasion 4 credit hours
This course examines the ecological and evolutionary factors that allow species to become invasive. It also explores the ecological consequences of invasive species.
In addition Emory Summer Study Abroad programs, CIPA also provides opportunities for students to conduct research abroad and community service projects abroad during the summer.
Minimum 3.0 GPA; BIO 141/142; good academic standing; at least 18 years of age; completion of a full year of college; and currently enrolled in a college/university. Students whose GPA is below 3.0 should still apply, since they may request a waiver.
