Southern India is the perfect destination for journalism students and aspiring travel writers to get their feet wet! Print journalism has existed in South India for over 200 years since the Madras Courier, a weekly newspaper, began publishing in 1785. Today, Chennai has eight major daily newspapers and an ever increasing array of weekly and monthly publications. ELI works with several publications based in Chennai to create internships designed to give participants practical training while providing a unique, in-depth learning experience and insight into the fast paced world of English print media in Chennai. Be ready to dive in! Interns pitch ideas, report on cultural and artistic events and help with editing. By interning abroad, participants gain exposure to diverse journalism practices, learn about the international issues facing the industry and get some great writing samples.
All ELI Programs are set up on a completely individual basis according to the interests and skills of each participant and the current needs of the local organizations we work with.
Participants in India experience India's vibrant culture in one of the most exciting parts of the country. The rich cultural heritage of South India is evident in the colorful festivals, elaborate temples, and daily rituals.
ELI participants work with local organizations and have a rare opportunity to gain insight into the day-to-day workings of Indian organizations.
The programs in India have completely flexible start dates most months of the year. During the summer months of May, June, and July orientation starts every other weekend. Participants should arrive in Chennai on the start date.
ELI volunteers are met at the airport and taken to a hotel for their first night in Chennai.· Orientation starts the next morning.· During the orientation we will help you set up a cell phone, exchange money, and take you sightseeing in Chennai before you settle into your program.
Participants must have a demonstrated interest in journalism such as university level coursework and past writing experience.
