ELI works with an endangered primate center which aims to help protect and promote two highly endangered forest primate specis in Ghana, the roloway monkey and the white-naped mongabey. The center houses 12 mangabeys, which represent more than 10% of the world-wide captive population of this species. Working with the European Breeding Program for Endangered Species, the primate center has made great strides in helping to ensure these species will continue to survive into the future. Participants with a background in vetrinary work or zoological sciences are especially needed to assist with these efforts. Volunteers with less education and experience are also needed, however, to help with everything to feeding and cleaning, to community education.
This program provides volunteers with hands-on experience and helps them to see and understand Ghanaian life. There are opportunities in both rural and urban areas. A series of visits and discussions for 6 days allows students to begin adjusting to life in Ghana. The orientation covers among others, culture, language, immigration/visa, health, money, transportation and food matters. Participants are then transferred to their final accommodation.
