At El Nahual we believe in “Educar Para El Desarrollo Social” - Education for Social Development and our mission is to use education and self-realization to create an environment which fosters sustainable living to the people in our community. Our unique non-profit language school exists for the purpose of maintaining our social work programs. All of the funds acquired from our Spanish students are put back into our programs and this distinguishes us from many other schools in Xela. With the support of our students and volunteers, we hope to make great changes in the lives of the people involved in our programs.
We seek passionate, enthusiastic students and volunteers that are motivated to give back to the low-income communities that we serve. El Nahual is a small community center located in the Pacaja neighborhood of Xela. We have various programs that exist to aid the community with their education, the first being government accredited school for children of low-income families. Secondly we offer an after school program for local children, called Manos de Colores. It is designed to supplement education received in the public schools and provide a safe, stimulating environment for the kids. In this program, volunteers are responsible for planning and teaching lessons for children aged 5 - 12 with the help and guidance, as well as our office resources. There are also opportunities to teach English at the center. English classes are twice a week for two hours. These are the main program in which volunteers work.
Send volunteers to public schools in the community to teach. Volunteers are responsible for planning and teaching lessons. Although we normally we send volunteers to teach English on a set schedule, the schools are open to receiving volunteers to teach other classes such as art or drama. This is fairly flexible, and we are able to make a program in collaboration with volunteers and the staff at the schools.
All of the funds from our Spanish language school return directly to the community through our educational and development projects. We offer four hours of one-on-one tutoring, five days per week with an experienced teacher and can accommodate every level of speaker—from absolute basic to extremely advanced.
