Description

This project is located in Quito at the Public Children's Hospital. It is a pediatric hospital that provides specialized health care for children from birth to 14 years of age. This is one of the main public hospitals in Ecuador and many of the children who receive care here come from lower economic backgrounds. If you want to truly make a difference and help others, Eco Volunteer UP provides a volunteer placement at this hospital. All forms of care are needed, from providing for basic care such as changing and feeding the children to entertaining them with reading, coloring, and game playing. This placement allows you to be creative. You are welcome to bring materials and create your program for the children.

Highlights

In Ecuador's capital city, Quito, there is a big difference between public and private healthcare. This project is located in two public hospitals, one in Quito and one in Los Chillos Valley (Sangolqui at 40 minutes from Quito's new town).

In terms of health, the previous governments reduced public funding for medical services. Families, unable to afford the expense of health care on their own, are routinely forced to forego necessary medical treatment. In addition, families in transition, those moving from what was once sustainable farm land to a dependency on urban employment, have undergone a change in diet. Traditional foods have been replaced by commercialized fast food and junk food, which has led to additional health problems including an increase in obesity and diabetes. Lack of access to health care and malnutrition coupled with other health care concerns such as hepatitis A, typhoid fever and malaria certainly add to the immediacy of the situation. Volunteers working in Ecuador can certainly bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the situation and in return benefit from their direct experience working with the neediest of populations.

We are a non-profit organization which is legally recognized by the Ecuadorian Government. Volunteers with Eco Volunteer UP have the choice of many worthy programs, such as vulnerable orphanages, institutes for children with disabilities, street children and local indigenous communities. There are volunteer programs located in and around Quito, the capital of Ecuador, as well as programs located in the Cloud Forest and its communities close to Quito, the Ecuadorian Amazon, the Galapagos Islands and other key places around Ecuador. We offer volunteers real immersion in the various Ecuadorian ecosystems, and the unique opportunity for learning and sharing about Ecuadorian cultures, costumes and traditions.
