Counseling and Spanish Program

I participated in the 6 week counseling and Spanish program during July-August of 2015. I stayed with a host family in the city of Buenos Aires.
The accommodations were wonderful! My host parents were friendly, caring, and made sure that I had a safe and enjoyable stay in Argentina. They were within walking distance of the school and were very knowledgeable. I felt welcome there!
I felt that the classes were just the right level of challenging. I was able to learn and grow without being frustrated. The counseling classes and field trips were an amazing experience. I got to practice the Spanish that I was learning in a variety of social service settings including a nursing home, a hospital for people with mental illness, and a residence for homeless mothers and their children. These field trips were my favorite part of the whole experience and a great way to practice my Spanish!
Being in a foreign country by myself for six weeks was a challenge, but I'm glad that I did it. I felt supported by ECELA, my host family, and some of the other students. Some of the days were long and challenging but I learned so much from them. Learning about the culture, the language, and how social services are run has been very beneficial for my job as a social work back in the United States!
