Duke University offered its 29th annual study program in Beijing in 2010, hosted at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), located conveniently in the Chaoyang District. The summer term, mid-June through mid-August, offers a eight-week intensive Chinese language program, earning the equivalent of two semesters of course credit. Language classes are taught by faculty who are selected by the Duke Study in China program. Experienced faculty from Duke University will coordinate the program. Other program features include a language pledge, local Chinese language partners, small classes, weekly Chinese table, and extra curricular activities.
A host family option is available for students with at least two years of Chinese study. All other students will be housed in modern international student dorms on campus.
The site of the summer 2008 Olympics, Beijing features many sites of interest, including the Forbidden City, Beihai Park, the Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square, and the Great Wall.
Participants go on organized excursions to places of interest in and around Beijing on weekends. In addition to visiting these sites, students have an opportunity to travel one weekend to another region of China. In the past, students have gone to sites such as the ancient city of Xian, famous for its terracotta army, and Datong, known for the Yungang Grottoes.
Most students live in a university residence hall, sharing a room with a fellow participant in the program. A host family option is also available for students with more advanced language skills.
