Located at New College, the University of Oxford, the Duke in Oxford summer program offers the opportunity to study British culture at England's oldest and one of its most venerable universities. The program is organized by Oxford's Department of Continuing Education in conjunction with the Global Education Office for Undergraduates (GEO-U) of Duke University.
An integral feature of this program is the tutorial method, an interactive style of instruction that is the central feature of an Oxford education. Duke in Oxford students enroll in one, double-credit tutorial in history, literature, political science, or philosophy, taught by an experienced Oxford professor (tutor). In addition to attending regular seminar meetings, students engage in weekly tutorial sessions with another student and the tutor to present and critique essays. Students have access to the world-famous Bodleian Library to compose weekly assignments. Additional guest lectures are given by eminent faculty from Oxford and other universities.
In the past, program excursions have included a tour of Stratford-upon-Avon, an evening production of the Royal Shakespeare Company, a day trip to London with an evening at the National Theatre, and a day trip to Bath.
Students are housed in single rooms at New College. Once a week, the program hosts a distinguished guest at a formal and festive dinner known as High Table.
