The Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies and the Global Education Office for Undergraduates (GEO-U) of Duke University offer a summer language and cultural program at St. Petersburg University. St. Petersburg, located near the Gulf of Finland, is the second largest Russian city. Some of the most outstanding features of the city are its beautiful palaces and churches and the "White Nights", which peak at the end of June.
Students at all levels of Russian may participate. Students register for two Duke Russian language courses appropriate to their respective level. Language placement is based on course work and a placement examination.
The program includes weekly excursions in and around St. Petersburg to historical sites, museums, and cultural performances, such as ballet, opera and theater. Additionally, students travel to Moscow, as well as another city in Russia or nearby country, which varies each year.
