This six-week, two-course program in Istanbul is based at the prestigious Bogazici University. The university offers a strikingly beautiful campus that sits on a hill by the Bosphorus, the body of water that divides the continents of Asia and Europe. Istanbul is an incredibly rich city in its multi-cultural history, arts, and contemporary life. Students have the opportunity to explore the city and other regions of Turkey.
Two courses will be offered as part of the 2012 summer program: "Gender, Politics, and Space in the Middle East", taught by University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Professor Gökar1ksel, and "Between Europe and Asia: The Geopolitics of Istanbul from Occupation to Globalization", taught by Duke Professor Göknar.
Coursework is complemented by cultural activities, including visits to museums, mosques, public monuments, and archaeological sites. Students also have the opportunity to explore cities and sites in other regions of Turkey, typically ranging from the "fairy chimneys" of Cappadocia to the Greco-Roman ruins of Ephesus.
