This program introduces participants to a contextual study of Netherlandish art and visual culture from the Late Medieval to the Early Modern period.
The first two weeks of the program take place in Amsterdam, the former international trading center of the Dutch Republic. The final four weeks of the program are based in Ghent, located in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, which has strong cultural, historical, and linguistic ties with the present-day Netherlands.
The program is designed to create a wide range of integrated cultural experiences through daily trips to urban centers such as Amsterdam, Leiden, Utrecht, Brussels, Ghent, Bruges, and Antwerp. The group visits major architectural sites, private collections, and museums, and has the opportunity to conduct hands-on research in collections which are often unavailable to the general public. Excursions include frequent guest presentations by leading international scholars in the field. In the past, the group has also traveled to other nearby countries such as France and Germany.
