Term

Dates

  • Description

The Duke Global Education Office for Undergraduates (GEO-U) and the Department of Germanic Languages and Literature, in cooperation with Rutgers University, offer a six-week, two-course summer program in Berlin. Duke Summer in Berlin offers a range of elective courses in a stimulating and historical urban environment. The program is interdisciplinary in nature and attractive to students with a substantial interest in German politics and culture. The principal attraction is Berlin itself, the capital of Germany and the economic capital of Europe. The program appeals to many students outside the German program, including those from Business, Mathematics, Philosophy, History, Jewish Studies, and Political Science.

  • Highlights

Students select from one of three tracks: English only; German only; or one course in German and one in English. Students with no prior German are welcome, either as beginners in a German language course or within the English-only track. The Duke English Department co-sponsors two creative writing workshops, one in prose and the other in poetry, within the Berlin summer program.

The program makes use of site-specific resources, such as the Berlin Jewish Museum, the Pergamon Museum of Architecture, the Stasi Museum, and the new museum of the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany). Day trips typically include Dresden, Leipzig where the new BMW auto plant and a historical museum are located, the Bundestag (Federal Parliament Building), the castles and gardens of Potsdam, the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, and other destinations.

Students are housed in shared apartments with full kitchens in Kreuzberg, a culturally vibrant section of Berlin.
