The Duke in Madrid (DIM) program was founded in 1989 and is sponsored by the Department of Romance Studies and the Office of Study Abroad of Duke University. Committed to a cultural studies perspective, the program aims at improving participants' Spanish fluency and deepening their understanding of Spain and its many cultures within a global context.
Student choose courses from among the academic offerings of the host institution, the Universidad San Pablo(USP), as well as courses designed specifically for DIM students and taught by the DIM resident director and select Spanish university faculty. Subject areas for courses include literature, art, economics, anthropology, history, and political science, among others. To expose students to the many cultures and languages of Spain, DIM sponsors several excursions each semester. The program alternates visits to Barcelona, Andalucia, and Galicia. Other destinations may include Salamanca, Segovia, El Escorial, Toledo, Avila, and Cuenca.
The program also organizes theater outings, museum visits, and attendance at other cultural activities in Madrid. When possible, the program sponsors guest lectures and discussion groups featuring prominent figures in the cultural arena.
Madrid, the capital of Spain, is an unforgettable city that combines a rich artistic and cultural heritage. A city of four million residents, hits urban landscape reflects its lengthy history. Visitors may stroll through the old narrow streets of the Madrid de los Austrias or along wide modern avenues such as La Castellana.
While traditional cultural elements such as bullfights and flamenco dancing still enliven Madrid, the city also has become a vital center of modern Europe, offering increasingly cosmopolitan activities and attractions. World-class museums such as the Museo Nacional del Prado, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza draw thousands of visitors each year.
The city's pleasant, sunny climate is ideal for enjoyment of its fine parks and botanical gardens, such as the Retiro. Those seeking evening entertainment can take advantage of contemporary theater, cinema, cafes, pubs, and night spots dedicated to music from around the world.
