  • Description

Through course work, family life, community activities, and cultural experiences, the Duke in the Andes program based in Quito, Ecuador seeks to instill in students a deeper knowledge of Ecuador and the Andean region. The academic and cultural content of the program emphasize the diversity of history and knowledge among the many Andean cultures and environments. The program affords students the opportunity to enroll in two local universities, choose from specialized curricula, work with a culturally diverse faculty, and participate in a variety of community-based, service learning experiences.

  • Highlights

The Duke in the Andes program takes an interdisciplinary approach to area and cultural studies, centered around a core seminar that encompasses sociological, anthropological, historical, and cultural aspects of globalization and colonial legacies in the Andean region. In addition to the mandatory core seminar, students choose their remaining courses from selected regular course offerings at the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana and the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO).Planned excursions take students to areas such as the Galapagos Islands, Otavalo, the Amazon region and the Esmeraldas region (the coast). Occasionally in the spring semester, the Galapagos excursion will be replaced with an excursion to Cuzco, Peru.
