Duke University, in cooperation with Yunnan Normal University in Kunming, offers a fall only program featuring intensive Chinese language study and two English-language content classes focusing on Chinese history and culture. Language classes are taught by local faculty who are selected by the Duke Study in China Program. An experienced faculty member from the United States coordinates the program in China. One of the two English language content courses, the Independent Field Research course, gives students the opportunity to undertake field research on an individual basis on a topic of their own choosing. The course aims to assist students in integrating what they have learned from the other courses and then apply their language and cultural skills in an action-based intellectual inquiry.
Duke awards credit for four semester courses, with the equivalent of sixteen semester credit hours, for the fall term. Please check with your university to see if these credits will be accepted.

In addition to the coursework on Chinese language, culture and history, the Duke in China fall semester program in Kunming offers a series of weekend fieldtrips to explore the natural and cultural riches of Kunming and its vicinity.
A major highlight of the program in Kunming is the weeklong fieldtrip to the historic cities of Dali and Lijiang, where students can learn first-hand about ethnic minority peoples such as the Bai and the Naxi through close interaction.
There is a language pledge, optional extracurricular activities, and an opportunity for independent travel during the one-week spring break. Homestay or Chinese roommate options are available or you may room with another international student.
