The Dickinson in Bologna program provides opportunities to study the Social Sciences in English and of Italian Studies in Italian. The Dickinson Center is located in Europe's oldest university city and welcomes students from Dickinson and other U.S. colleges and universities for a full-year or a semester academic program in European politics, diplomacy, history, economics, and Italian culture. They take advantage of the high quality of Dickinson's liberal arts education while experiencing the joys of living in Italy.
* Academic Program
The majority of students who come to Bologna are majoring in political science, international relations, history, or economics. Those courses are taught in English. Many also take courses in English at the Bologna Center of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. Students without intermediate-level Italian take an intensive four-week introductory course in Italian upon arrival and have an opportunity to study the language throughout the year, if they choose. Students with a background in Italian may take courses, most taught in Italian, in Italian literature, history, and art. They may also take courses at the University of Bologna if their fluency in the language is sufficient. Students with intermediate-level Italian or higher take an intensive four-week course in Italian upon arrival.
Students live in locally rented apartments and are given an allowance every two weeks when classes are in session to spend on food. Inexpensive meals can be found at any of the self-service restaurants near the Center, in small family-oriented Trattorie or in the cafeteria of the University of Bologna. One of the pleasures of living in Bologna is shopping in the city's open-air market. Students may also live and take some meals with a host family if they choose. Student lodging is available for the nine months of the program, including vacation periods.
