Dickinson's study abroad program at the University of Bremen serves to fully integrate students into German university life. They welcome students from Dickinson and other U.S. colleges and universities for a full-year or spring-only academic program. Bremen, a harbor town on the Weser River with a population of more than half-a-million people, is Germany's smallest city-state. The city is a remarkable blend of the traditional and contemporary, and the told city center is still surrounded by earthen ramparts and a moat.
* Academic Program
Students directly enroll at the University of Bremen under the guidance of an academic director, getting the best of both worlds: the experience of studying in the German university system and they type of faculty oversight that most American students are accustomed to receiving. The University of Bremen was founded in 1971 and has been named among the top 10 institutions of higher learning in Germany. Hallmarks of a University of Bremen education include interdisciplinary study and research, research-based teaching projects and a pervasive focus on internationalization.
Program participants are prepared for enrollment at the university by first taking part in a pre-semester orientation and completing a four-week, one-credit, intensive language course. Academic year participants have the opportunity to complete this in another part of the country before settling in to Bremen. Spring semester students will complete the intensive language course in Bremen. Additionally, students are required to complete a one-semester core course relating to German area studies alongside classes in any department or field within their degree course scheme.
* Internships
Academic-year participants may elect to participate in an internship during the spring semester. The academic director will assist in internship placements, which are available at many organizations.
* Housing
Students are housed in students' dormitories. Private-room rentals in Bremen are possible in exceptional cases and at a student's own initiative.
