Description

Dickinson's program in Beijing is located on the campus of Renmin University of China, in the northwestern part of the city. It offers to students from Dickinson and other U.S. colleges and universities a full academic year or a fall semester studying Chinese language (Mandarin)and culture. The city of Beijing provides abundant contrasts between ancient historical and cultural sites (such as the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace) and a modern, bustling urban setting providing many opportunities for practicing one's Chinese, surveying social change, and sampling the delights of the local cuisine and culture.

* Academic Program

The majority of students who come to Beijing concentrate on intensive language study complemented by formal course work and independent study focusing on contemporary Chinese culture. Electives in calligraphy and Chinese painting are also available. Well-prepared full-year students may elect an internship and/or take a range of regular courses at Renmin University during the spring semester.

Highlights

Living Arrangements and Meals:

Students live on campus in the Foreign Students Dormitory which houses approximately 170 international students from around the world.Living conditions are somewhat spartan, consisting of double or single rooms with toilet and bathroom facilities on each floor. Program participants may eat in the cafeteria, in numerous restaurants in the neighborhoods surrounding the university, or purchase food in nearby markets for preparation in their rooms.

Program Fees Include:

The program comprehensive fee is announced in the spring prior to the beginning of the program. For the current year's fee, you can request a copy via e-mail. Costs include round-trip airfare, tuition, and room while the program is in session, and all Dickinson field trips.
