Share |

Location: Antigua: Guatemala

Program Duration: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks

Typical Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks

Dates: May - June (Post Secondary Students/Youth), July 4 - 18, August 15 - 29, October 3 - 17, November 21 - December 3.

  • Description

Developing World Connections volunteers will assist in the construction of needed infrastructure projects, such as the construction of a youth 'safe' house. In collaboration with host partner, Open Window Foundation, participants will assist the Foundation in running a library, after school programs and providing free education for disadvantaged children in the village of San Miguel Duenas on the outskirts of Antigua. Volunteers with some knowledge of Spanish can assist younger children with their reading skills. Other volunteers may be asked to help small groups of children with computer skills, numbers and crafts.

  • Highlights

Volunteers benefit from working in a group, which offers the sense of team work and group accomplishment. Volunteers work with and alongside locals. By working together, one benefits from a real sense of global citizenship and solidarity. All experiences are led by an experienced team leader who helps facilitate the experience. Volunteers benefit from the lasting friendships developed and from the life changing impact of such a unique and meaningful experience. Participants may choose to spend time afterwards exploring some of the most beautiful scenery, exotic sites and rich cultural heritage of Guatemala.

  • Developing World Connections's Mission Statement

Our Mission: To contribute to the betterment of our global community by providing service to people in developing nations. Our Philosophy: Developing World Connections strongly believes that great learning comes as a result of working with people from all nations. It is not our purpose to change the culture of our host country, but rather to embrace and better understand the differences that give equal value to each society. Our volunteers are guests who respect the host country's culture and honour the goodwill extended to them during their visit. We believe the footprint we leave behind should be gentle, the friendships great, and the memories we bring home should positively and profoundly impact our lives.
