  • Description

    Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. The Counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. This position involves working on weekends and other unsocial hours.

    The role of Counselor is an important one, directly concerned with the welfare and enjoyment of camp students. This requires the post-holder to provide direct leadership for a group of 13-20 campers and assist in a full range of activities and excursions both on and off site. Counselors will also assist with railway station transfers of campers to the camp and back and offer constructive assistance as required to all aspects of the camp operation. The ideal Counselor will be fun, energetic and outgoing but also have a high level of responsibility and authority. We aim for all our Counselors to have as much fun as possible whilst always acting with high regard for the rules and policies of DEC camp and maintaining discipline throughout the course.

    General Duties and Responsibilities
    1.) Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their residence, within activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
    - Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
    - Assure campers are properly supervised at all times.
    - Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
    2.) Participate in the development and implementation of programme activities, both daytime and evening ones, for campers within the mission and outcomes.
    - Responsible for preparing, organizing, leading and assisting with the teaching of activities.
    - Actively participate in all programme areas as assigned.
    - Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
    - Assist in programme areas such as waterfront, nature, all camp activities, and arts and crafts as directed.
    3.) Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
    - Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
    - Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by health care manager.
    - Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems, and discuss with camp health manager and/or camp director when appropriate.
    - Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to camp director.
    4.) Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
    - Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
    - Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
    5.) Be willing to take full responsibility for the welfare and enjoyment of the campers.
    6.) To attend a staff induction prior to the beginning of the camp course and to have read and be fully conversant with the staff handbook and relevant Child Protection issues.
    7.) To live on-site, board and lodging provided as part of salary package, from 4 days prior to the start of the course until the last contracted day (which will include the night after students have left).
    8.) To carry out all tasks concerned with the setting up, administration and closing down of the centre
    9.) Be willing to liaise with the Programme Director in advance of the programme as necessary

    Other Job Duties:
    - Maintain accurate information regarding campers locations at all times
    - Develop one on one relationships with individual campers
    - Be concerned for the social adjustment of EACH camper
    - Participate in all staff meetings and staff training events
    - Promote camper participation in ALL activities and lessons
    - Designing, managing and leading own daytime activity sessions in the areas: dance, music, arts&crafts, sport, nature activities, etc.
    - Assist with leading off-site excursions and student transfers from railway station to camp and back
    - Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
    - Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned.
    - Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
    - Assist in the planning and/or leading of any special events

    Counselor Rules(
    1.) Counselors are not to leave the camp premises without permission of their immediate Line Manager(
    2.) Counselors are to maintain the curfew as designated by Line Management(
    3.) Counselors will stay with their campers at ALL TIMES (day and night) unless otherwise assigned.(
    4.) Counselors will not use inappropriate language.

    The attendance of the staff orientation prior to the commencement of the camp operations is obligatory for all staff members

  • Qualifications

    - Native English speaker
    - Ideally, must have completed their freshman year of college before the camp season begins.
    - Ideally currently working towards a Degree in a field like Recreation Studies, Leisure Management, Theater or Performing Arts, Creative Arts, Sports & Health Studies, a.o.
    - Ideally, previous experience of teaching children/ young people in a similar or related environment
    - Ability to work well in a fast-paced and sometimes pressured environment
    - Ability to work as part of a team, sharing resources, ideas and lending support to colleagues as required.
    - Ability and confidence to lead from the front and by example  you will be required to lead excursions off site, as well as participate in activities on and off site, such as discos, quiz nights and talent shows.
    - Ability to use own initiative and work as part of a team.
    - Strong desire to work with children in an outdoor setting
    - Motivation to learn and practice new skills
    - Desirable: First Aid Certificate and/or Life Guard Certificate
