I just completed my 8-week program with Cultural Canvas 2 weeks ago and found the experience in my placement very rewarding and fulfilling. I was working with underprivileged hill tribe teen girls who welcomed me with open arms. It is one placement that I would recommend to future volunteers. For a new organization, Sara and the rest of the Cultural Canvas staff did an excellent job in introducing Chiang Mai to me and my fellow volunteers (a total of 6 women). They know Chiang Mai inside-and-out and have good relations with very interesting individuals and organizations who are doing excellent work in the area. They provided us with comfortable accommodations in a great location (not too busy with tourists like other parts of the city), an excellent cook, and a friendly driver who dutifully chauffeured us to all our placements (not an easy task for 6 individuals!). In addition to volunteer placement, Cultural Canvas also launched an art program that had a very successful first project called the Lomo Project (photography). I believe it is currently in exhibit at the Chiang Mai University. Since it is a new program, it is an exciting time for the staff and volunteers alike since there is so much to do. This is an excellent opportunity for potential volunteers with a creative flair and/or those who would like diversity in their placements.
