Program Duration
9-12 weeks, 3-6 months (includes high school academic semester abroad)
The Tropical Challenge course offers the opportunity to get certified as a raft guide, scuba diver, and swift water rescue technician. Students learn how to whitewater kayak, about Costa Rican culture, and find themselves doing something new to our lineup: rock-climbing. Have an unforgettable adventure while earning up to 12 school credits.
Core Activities:
- CPR/First Aid Training (2-3 days)
- Backpacking/camping/homestays (9-12 days)
- Whitewater Rescue Technician certification (3-4 days)
- Whitewater rafting (12-15 days)
- Rock climbing/rappelling (3-5 days)
- Surfing (10-12 days)
- Service project (1-3 days)
- SCUBA in Panama (5-8 days)
- Inflatable or hard-shell kayaking (5-7 days)
- Zip-lining/San Jose city tour (1 day).
Duration: 70 days (Spring 2012)
Age Range: 17+
Certifications Earned:
* SCUBA Diver Certification (NAUI)
* CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (American Red Cross)
* Whitewater Rescue Technician (Rescue 3 International)
* Whitewater Rafting, Raft Guide Level III (International Rafting Federation)
Academic Credit Available: 12 possible credits
* Groups will tour the vibrant capital city of San Jose, as well as participate in an enriching service project in environmental conservation, education or community beautification.
