Coral Cay Conservation is currently working towards setting up a new and exciting conservation project based in Sri Lanka! Volunteers engaged in Coral Cay's Rekawa Sri Lanka Conservation Project (RSCP) will be involved in identifying local turtle nest sites, measuring and weighing eggs, collecting biometric data on each turtle, and helping in the identification of marine turtle populations that frequent the local beaches. Although this project is still in its infancy, we are also in the process of establishing a variety of community engagement and education projects, including assisting with mangrove re-plantations, conducting terrestrial and marine species studies, educational events at the local schools, assisting with local fish rearing projects and building local capacity to provide tourism services.
Rekawa is located off the south-eastern Indian peninsula, surrounded by the Indian Ocean. Widely regarded as having some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Sri Lanka is also home to an incredible array of natural diversity and one of the best places in the world to see resident Blue Whales! Sri Lankans are extremely friendly, hospitable and considerate people, with their own unique culture and customs. For centuries, coastal communities have relied heavily on local marine wildlife for their livelihood; however, due to overfishing and hunting, many of the species in the area are have become endangered.
The coast of Rekawa, along the southern end of Sri Lanka is unique in the world. It's one of the few places, if not the only place where five of the seven marine turtle species found around the world actively nest on the beaches. This includes Leatherbacks, Hawksbills, Loggerheads, Greens and Olive Ridleys. Unfortunately, all five species of marine turtle are either vulnerable or critically endangered.
