Teach in Chile at Antonio Rendic School
Description
We want to incorporate qualified elementary teachers into our bilingual program the 2012 and 2013 school years. Our school year runs from the end of February through the end of December (which provides foreign teachers the opportunity to go home for Christmas, if they desire). Contracts are offered are for a minimum of two years. Upon completion of the initial two-year contract, the contract can be renewed yearly.
Highlights
* School Community:
The majority of our students are native Spanish speakers, mostly from Chile. Only a handful of students come from another country, and are typically participating in an exchange program.
* Class Size:
The classes have an average of 26 children, from Playgroup (3 years) through Twelfth Grade (17 years).
* Language:
PK- 4th grade is a true bilingual program and the classroom time is divided between English and Spanish. From 5th -12th grade the majority of the instruction is in Spanish. They receive about 7 hours of English instruction each week. The majority of the parents speak Spanish, and a few speak or understand English.
* Weekly Hours:
Teachers are paid for a 40 hours work each week that ranges between the hours of 8 am-5:10 pm. All teachers are required to work 32 hours directly with students. Two hours a week are reserved for Staff Meetings, five hours are reserved for general coordination meetings, class planning, and one hour a week is reserved for parent conferences.
* Specific Duties:
The specific duties of teachers vary slightly depending on the level:
Playgroup - Kindergarten:
Teachers are responsible for teaching the whole program, due to The Chilean Pre-school curriculum. The Pre-school program is done completely in English. Teachers are also responsible for some recess and lunch supervision.
First Grade - Fourth Grade:
Teachers are responsible for teaching Language Arts, some hours of Math, Science and Social Studies, Art and Technology Education. Other teachers are responsible for Lenguaje y Comunicacion (Spanish), Music, Physical Education, and Religion. Teachers are also responsible for some recess and lunch supervision.
* Curriculum and Books:
The school uses materials from the Scott Foresman Reading Street program for teaching Language Arts from Pre-Kinder to Fourth Grade.

- A health care package that covers health care - coverage begins 1 month after the signing of the contract.
- A room in a shared apartment with 2 to 3 other teachers. Teachers are responsible for paying their own water, electricity, gas, phone/cable and Internet bills. Also, teachers pay the Building Fees, which are about USD 200 each month divided between the apartments occupants.
- The return flight and bonus is awarded upon the completion of the contract.
Other Sources of Income: While most teachers find the salary is more than adequate to live on, there are many opportunities to earn extra money after school hours, usually in the form of private English classes after work (not to members to our community) or helping with translations.
