  • Description

The poetic term "The Land Below the Wind" refers to those Southeast Asian countries whose ecosystems experience seasonal rains and dry, warm winters, such as those of Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. The seasonal rains, which last from June through October, bring much needed water to these regions, which have practiced wet cultivation for thousands of years. This water culture, which provides the livelihood for most of the population, was the foundation for the establishment of many Southeast Asian kingdoms and continues to be the main source of food and revenue for these countries. Participants in "The Land Below the Wind" will have a chance to experience the way of life that has grown out of the ecosystem as we travel through Bangkok, Ayuthaya, Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, Hanoi and Ha Long Bay and see how the lives of the Thais, Laotian and Vietnamese peoples revolve around this precious natural resource. The trip will also take us to one of the most spectacular bays in Southeast Asia, Ha Long Bay, which is known as the location for several Hollywood productions.

Lectures and informal discussions will be in English. These will take place at museums, monuments, local universities, and during boat and city tours.
