Join City College of San Francisco in Oaxaca, Mexico this summer, and experience a unique immersion into the Spanish language and Mexican culture. Spend three weeks studying Spanish intensively on the grounds of the beautiful Instituto Cultural Oaxaca, a language school that was once a family estate. Earn three units of college credit for courses in Spanish conversation or literature, and live with a local family who will provide you with a room and breakfast, as well as an entree into the culture and a chance to practice your Spanish skills.
Learn Spanish in Oaxaca while surrounded by the spectacular Madre del Sur Mountains. Enjoy Oaxaca's moderate climate, indigenous cultures, colonial monuments, archaeological treasures and vast ethnic and geographical diversity.
The whole world is your "language lab" in Oaxaca, as you study Spanish by day in classes and cultural workshops, and spend your afternoons and evenings exploring this fascinating city. Students also have the option of setting up an "intercambio" or language exchange with local native speakers who are interested in improving their English.
Workshops are offered in cultural topics such as Oaxacan regional cooking, Mixtec back-strap loom weaving, folkloric or salsa dance, Mexican cinema, pottery making and more.
Weekend trips are arranged by the Instituto Cultural Oaxaca to the many artisanal villages and archeological sites in Oaxaca. The villages are known for their "barro negro" (black clay pottery), "tapetes" (hand woven rugs) and mythical, fantastical "alebrijes" (hand-carved wooden animals). Students will also have the opportunity to visit some of the many Zapotec and Mixtec ruins that surround the city of Oaxaca.
