  The summer South African Studies study abroad program in Cape Town, South Africa provides a range of academic, intellectual, and intercultural experiences that enable students to witness and take part in the complex process of transformation in South Africa. Through an innovative course, a volunteer project, and exploration of the various communities in and around Cape Town, students become participants in, rather than mere observers of, this dynamic environment. Through this process, students gain a comprehensive understanding of the evolving story that is South Africa.

  Academic Program
  This program is based on the University of Cape Town (UCT) campus. The academic content of the program is designed and managed by CIEE, and thus summer program participants should understand that they will not be taking regular UCT courses. The program is appropriate for all students who want to learn firsthand about the country, its people, and the transformations that have occurred over the past 15 years in South African society. While all students have an opportunity to participate in volunteer activities, Transformation in South Africa (AFST 3001 CTSU / GEOG 3001 CTSU) includes a community-based volunteer component designed to help students better understand South African history, politics, educational challenges, and societal values and traditions.

  Academic Culture
  The courses are taught as seminars, with various discussions, guest lectures, and presentations. Courses meet intensively for three weeks with additional time each week reserved for student volunteer projects, program activities, and excursions.

Cultural Activities and Field Trips
The academic program is supplemented by field trips and excursions to various points of interest around Cape Town and the Western Cape Province. Field trips and excursions may include visits to the Cape Peninsula and the Cape Flats, as well as attendance at rugby matches. A two-day homestay with a local family in the "coloured" community of Ocean View is also included in the cultural program. This exposes CIEE students to positive images of previously disadvantaged groups of people in South Africa, including the "coloured" and Muslim communities.

The comprehensive cultural program consists of local theater, music, and dance productions; museum tours; and visits to local festivals. Events and activities are chosen specifically to provide students with a good overview of the diversity in South Africa and to complement the overall theme of transformation discussed in the core course.

Community Engagement
Community engagement is one of the central components of this summer program. As part of the CIEE courses, CIEE staff members arrange community engagement projects and activities with various organizations and communities throughout the greater Cape Town area. The projects are designed to give students a firsthand look at the challenges facing South Africa today. CIEE has an established network of community partnerships with local NGOs, schools, and orphanages.
