  • Description

The one or two session summer Language and Culture study abroad program in Alcala; de Henares, Spain provides students with the opportunity to develop advanced language skills and increase their knowledge of Spanish language and culture through coursework in Spanish language and area studies, and a series of excursions.

    Academic Program
Established in 1999, the CIEE Study Center at the Universidad de Alcala; provides an academic program for students with a high-intermediate to advanced level of Spanish. The summer program, established in 2008, consists of language and culture courses offered through the Institute (Hispanic studies for U.S. students). Two sessions are offered. Students may enroll in either one or both sessions. For some courses, prerequisites are required for admission. All language instruction on the program is at the intermediate- advanced or advanced level. Students take two courses per session.

    Academic Culture
The Institute is housed in a 17th century convent, which has been renovated to preserve the building's beauty and charm, while providing modern office and classroom space. Class size ranges from five to 23 students, all from U.S. colleges and universities. Instruction is in Spanish. Classes at the Institute meet from Monday through Thursday, in the morning and afternoon. Fridays are reserved for class-related activities, weekend excursions, and field trips.

Although extracurricular activities and personal travel contribute to the student's overall study abroad experience, attendance in class is paramount. An early departure for or a late return from weekend travel is not allowed. Any travel should take place prior to the start of the program, or upon completion of the program.
