The Asian and African Studies study abroad program in London, England is designed for students interested in Africa, Asia, and Middle Eastern regional studies who wish to directly integrate at a top London university.
The Asian and African Studies program at the CIEE Study Center at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) has two main goals: to provide a rigorous and creative academic experience focusing on studies in the regions of Africa, Asia, and/or the Middle East and to provide a critical, in-depth appreciation of London. These goals are achieved by direct enrollment courses and activities coordinated by CIEE throughout the semester. Integration with students at SOAS creates opportunities to become participants in the economic and intellectual life of London.
Academic Program
The CIEE Study Center in London opened in 2000. The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) was added as a host institution in 2006. CIEE students at SOAS learn about the societies, economies, and cultures of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. There are fifteen departments at SOAS grouped into three faculties: Arts and Humanities, Languages and Cultures, and Law and Social Sciences. CIEE students may register for all courses available to study abroad students for which they meet the prerequisites. Cross registration among CIEE host institutions is not possible.
Academic Culture
CIEE participants may notice a striking difference between the educational system in the United States and Britain. The British educational system allows students greater responsibility and initiative in a less structured environment. The CIEE program is geared towards students who are motivated, self-sufficient, and fully interested in experiencing the British educational system. To aid in this transition, the CIEE London Academic Advisor will cover these differences during orientation and will be available throughout the semester.
The advantage of studying at SOAS is that students receive close supervision and have regular contact with faculty. Learning takes place through a coherent blend of lectures, seminars, and tutorials (individual or small group sessions).
SOAS's fall term runs from September to December; the spring term from January to March; and the summer term from April to June. Students participating in the U.S. spring semester attend SOAS for the spring and summer terms; there is a four-week break between terms. Students may not enroll for the SOAS spring or summer term only.
Culture
Cultural Activities and Field Trips
Cultural Activities and Field Trips CIEE excursions help students explore all aspects of contemporary London during their stay, including trips to Parliament, sporting events, concerts, and the theater. Each semester also includes a weekend trip to another area within the UK or Ireland. Past participants have had the opportunity to visit Edinburgh, Dublin and the Welsh Coast.
University Life
SOAS has a thriving international and multicultural student union which is a hub for social life, with frequent entertainment and outings. As a SOAS participant, students become part of the University of London Union, which is located a few minutes away and houses a swimming pool, gyms, and lounges.
