Come and experience a different culture while gaining practical knowledge that gives you an edge to the international market. This program begins in late June. You will have the chance to visit some of Spain's most cherished landmarks during the 6-day excursion and will be able to fly to an ultimate destination of La Coruña located on the Atlantic coast. Study in Spain and experience all that it has to offer.
This program tends to fill before the end of winter. Pre-enrollment for the following year may then be considered.
For more than 30 years, Choate has offered a variety of international study opportunities in the summer to motivated high school students entering 10-12. Native teachers experienced with teaching American students and carefully selected host families make for an unforgettable experience in the language and culture. Choate offers a great option for those who wish to study in Spain.
* Families and the Home-Stay
Study in Spain and experience life in a Spanish home which can be very rewarding. Our host families come in many varieties: some with young children, some with older children; some two-parent, some single-parent; some older families, some younger.
The home-stay is an opportunity for students who study in Spain to live in a Spanish home and to develop a relationship with real people. Complete immersion in Spanish language and culture is a reality as students share all meals with and become a part of the family.
* Excursions
La Coruna has superb beaches with clean, clear water and fine, white sand, as well as tempting shops for the souvenir hunter. Teachers accompany students weekly to a local cultural interest, such as a newspaper plant, an archaeological museum, a planetarium, or a nearby relic of ancient Roman architecture.
On weekends some of the Spanish host brothers and sisters may join our students on our excursions out of town. Past excursions have included places such as Bayona and la Toja.
During the five-week program, the groups enjoy a 6-day excursion to sites such as:
* Avila - with views of the medieval fortified walls
* La Coruna - visits to the Castillo S. Anton, Torre de Hercules and Plaza de Maria Pita
* Madrid - tours of the Royal Palace and Prado Museum and possibly attending a bullfight
* Salamanca - with the university, the "new" cathedral, and the Casa de las Conchas
* Santiago - visits to the cathedral and the old city
* Segovia - exploring the castle and the Roman aqueduct
* Toledo - a visit of the cathedral, the Transito Synagogue, and the House of El Greco.
* Academics
A placement exam determines the class level at which students are placed:
* Intermediate - for those wishing to master the grammar of the middle years
* Advanced - for those readying for an Advanced Placement course
The academic portion of the day runs from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon during the week and consists of three classes. Classes are conducted in Spanish, and all students who study in Spain have at least two native Spanish instructors. After classes, students share lunch with their hosts, and afternoons offer ample time for leisure activities and time to prepare the next day's assignments.
