As a rule, the further away from Central you get, the less likely it is that your taxi driver will speak English, so non-Cantonese speakers who are new to the city will find it useful to learn the name of their building in Cantonese (check with your concierge). Compared to other world cities, taxis in Hong Kong are very good value- a ten-minute cab ride will cost around HKD 35. Ensure you have small change with you for cabs as anything bigger than a HKD100 note is often not accepted. If you haven’t had a chance to change up your HK$500 note, let the driver know as soon as you get in the cab to save an argument at your destination.
