CET Intensive Japanese Language and Culture Studies in Osaka

Location

Japan: Osaka

Description

Designed for students who want to dramatically improve their Japanese and immerse themselves in life in Japan, this CET program delivers challenges both in and out of the classroom. Set in the manageable and well-connected city of Osaka, this program gives students the opportunity to improve their language skills while gaining a broad introduction to Japanese culture through diverse academics, innovative activities and class excursions. CET students also have the unique opportunity to room with a Japanese university student allowing them to experience a side of Japan not known to many foreigners.

The spring and fall Osaka semesters begin with a one-week intensive Japanese language course (20 hours) designed to provide students with the skills necessary for living in Japan. For the remainder of the semester, students take a language course based on their level (140 hours), complete a language project based on their interests (20 hours) and choose from a range of other language and elective differentiated by two tracks.

CET students have the unique chance to room with a Japanese university student in furnished apartments near campus. Roommates hail from OGU, maintain a Japanese-only language pledge (during the summer-term only) and are excited about sharing about their country with CET students. CET students can prepare meals at home in private kitchens or eat inexpensively at local restaurants.

The Resident Director and language teachers organize activities and excursions to supplement class material. Language class excursions may take students to the Ramen factory museum or historic Nara. CETs Japanese-chat lounge sponsors activities such as shodo, tea ceremony demonstrations or manga making lessons. Students are also welcome to join OGU clubs such as brass band or kendo. Excursions include educational activities in the region such as a rural overnight or a visit to a mountain temple. Due to Osakas convenient location, students are free to take day trips to nearby locations such as Himeji, Nara, Kyoto and Kobe and join in the areas numerous festivals.
