CET Crossroads of Islam, Judaism and Christianity in Ávila, Spain

Share |

Location
Spain: Avila

Term
Fall, Spring, Summer

Dates
Fall- Mid September to Late December, Spring- Late January to Mid May, Summer- Mid June to Mid August

  • Description

There are always lessons to be learned in studying the past. For this reason, CET has created a framework for students to explore the meeting of three cultures: Islam, Christianity and Judaism, and how their past and present coexistence shapes the people of Spain and their world-view. Now more than ever, it is imperative to understand the history of tolerance and intolerance, and how to work towards nurturing peace and long-term solutions to age-old tensions and misunderstandings. Once the historical foundation is laid, students will apply the lessons learned to the modern context, and enhance their learning experience with experiential study trips to cities and villages near Avila, cities in Andalucia and, finally, Morocco.

Ávila is a natural setting for this program. The three cultures interacted here during the medieval period, and each culture contributed to the construction of the city walls, which are still standing today. Ávila is currently home to a Center for Mysticism, stemming from the citys history as the home of Saint Teresa as well as Moses de Leon. Only a short train ride from Madrid or Salamanca, Ávila is the perfect spot for an unforgettable study abroad experience.
