The TEFL Intensive Program is a four-week, university-based training opportunity in Canada. It trains students to meet the standards required for teachers of English as a Foreign Language. TEFL is open to both native and skilled non-native speakers of the English language, and provides a balance of academic and practical training in communicative language teaching. The TEFL Intensive Program is administered by the University of Saskatchewan Language Centre in cooperation with the CERTESL Program at the Extension Division of the University of Saskatchewan.
Successful program participants receive a Certificate in TEFL and, if they achieve an average of at least 60% in both halves of the program, they receive transfer credit into the more advanced CERTESL Program, which is accredited by TESL Canada and TESL Ontario. Applicants must meet the normal requirements for university entrance (high school completion with an average of at least 65%; proof of English competency for non-native speakers).
In addition to training ESL/EFL teachers in the TEFL Intensive program, the University of Saskatchewan Language Centre provides a comprehensive full-time program in English for Academic Purposes, special EFL programs that can be tailored to the needs of international partners ranging from commercial language schools to government ministries, part-time classes in English and an array of other languages, and French immersion. The TEFL Intensive program is integrated into USLC's EAP and specialized ESL programs; trainees in TEFL observe classes and conduct extensive tutoring practice with enthusiastic students of English. Full-time EAP students benefit from a comprehensive range of activities options and well-managed family homestay program. The homestay program is also open to non-native speakers of English who are enrolled in the TEFL Intensive.
Completers of Level 50 in USLC's EAP program who meet other university entrance requirements are eligible for acceptance into the University of Saskatchewan without further English assessment. Level 45 completers who plan to return to their home countries to teach can be granted special admission into the TEFL Intensive.

TEFL Intensive Program tuition includes instruction, texts and course guides, library access, computer access, campus recreation access, administration/admission fees and a CAD 75 bursary for anyone who completes one additional class in the distance-delivered CERTESL program during the following academic year.
