  • Description

CLIC IH works dynamically with its partner, the University of Seville, on both long and short term programs for study in language courses, Hispanic studies courses, and a plethora of other areas in the humanities and liberal arts.

    Aims:
    - To improve linguistic skills in small, student-centered classes that effect real language progress in an intensive, immersion environment unattainable in the student's home institution
    - To foster intercultural competence skills through real encounters with the host culture through dynamic activities spanning various areas: social, cultural, athletic, academic, etc.
    - To encourage specialization in topic areas of interest to the student or relevant to his or her career.

  • Highlights

How are FoCUS programs unique? One, we do not skimp on language. Many university programs offer only 3 or 4 hour classes that meet two or three days a week. Language is at the heart of the study abroad experience, and we believe it a vital component of study abroad programs that students take intensive language classes to truly counter the daily linguistic challenges they face, and surmount these effectively. Classes meeting a few hours a week might suffice to maintain a given level, but in order to improve and acquire new linguistic structures, consistent, intensive study is the best.

Two, the unique FoCUS programs at CLIC combine these student-centered language courses with content area courses at the University of Seville and a built-in, academic, extra-curricular program in the Focus area. These are workshops, exclusive excursions, visits, and encounters in the that contribute to the overall academic experience. Each semester the workshops and lecture schedule will be published the month of the program start, in order to take advantage of local activities.

Three, students may opt to continue their studies in a hands-on internship lasting 6 weeks at the semester's end. The internship is orientated around his or her interests or academic field.

  • Centro de Lenguas e Intercambio (CLIC) International House's Mission Statement

CLIC IH opened its doors in 1983 under the name Centro de Lenguas e Intercambio Cultural (Center for Languages and Cultural Exchange). By cultural exchange we mean the sharing of cultural differences at myriad levels: social, political, and ethic, to name a few. Inter is a key prefix to understanding this concept in Spanish, as it means between, among, and within, at once. Cultural exchange at CLIC IH then is experiencing first-hand the positive friction of cultural difference, one that both defines us in relief to others, and makes us aware of our commonalities as human beings. This is one of our goals as a center for cultural encounters. Our name and our very building speak to the heart of what we want to achieve. The historical mansion refurbished to house CLIC-IH was redesigned to include a central interior patio full of sunlight, terraces, and windows. These offer views onto floors of the school at almost all angles. We actively look toward transparency in business operations, the highest ceiling for standards and innovation in academic programs, and finally, to fomenting truly open cultural exchange through language learning. This goal is also visible in our staff. We are from multiple continents and can address the 25+ nationalities that are present at any time in the school in various languages. We believe that through cultural exchange, facilitated in language education, we come to know one another, and by knowing one another, we can construct positive social change.
