3 cycle English School Volunteer

The CIS English School is always seeking ways to be better. I really enjoyed working with the school for a more extended period of time than most people have the opportunity. It was great to see the amount of growth in even just three teaching cycles. The students at CIS are one of the best parts. They come from a variety of different backgrounds and their knowledge and perspectives on the various social topics discussed in Popular Education was truly insightful. I felt like I learned so much about the country while teaching at the school but I also grew so much as a teacher. I would recommend this program to anyone who seeks personal growth while making a positive impact on the world. Keep an open mind and take advantage of the many opportunities that CIS offers to immerse you in the culture and history of El Salvador. I look forward to returning to my elementary classroom in the United States and sharing much of what I learned during my time here with my students. Thank you CIS!

Teaching English and Studying Spanish in San Salvador, El Salvador

I came to study Spanish at the Centro Intercambio y Solidaridad in 2012 - the classes are small, teachers are excellent and the CIS is not just a school - it's a social justice organization so by studying there you are learning about the reality of life in El Salvador and supporting programs that reach deep into local impoverished communities. I began volunteering as an English teacher in the fall of 2012 and since I'm retired from my job in the USA (was a labor and community organizer) I've been living in San Salvador and volunteering with CIS since then. It's great - again, not just English classes but places to help the students know El Salvador, connect with the world - while studying English. The CIS is a great organization, with a well-organized program - and a lot of great host families who live within a quick walk or bus ride from the office. I highly recommend both the Spanish school and the volunteer experience.
