Health professionals in the United States are working with an increasingly diverse population. Learn about a variety of health care settings in the Yucatan, which may include government-run social service hospitals, large private hospitals and clinics, as well as rural and urban health care programs. Explore the impact of cultural expectations and complex health issues as they relate to your profession in health care, social or public service. Students can select one or both of the following; Healthcare in Yucatan (taught in English) or Spanish for Health Professionals (minimum of two semesters of college level Spanish required).
Students have the option to enroll in one or both program courses based on their language ability and academic needs. Plan for each course to meet two and a half hours a day, Monday through Thursday. Spanish for Health Professionals will focus on learning or improving both written and oral Spanish skills - especially those specific to health care. Healthcare in Yucatan will introduce you to Mexican expectations and styles of health care. Students can also expect to visits to NGOs, government run social service hospitals, large private hospitals and clinics as well as rural and urban health care.
Merida is an ideal location for global health studies because of its own diverse populations. Boasting a rich history of the ancient Maya people, Merida is also a prosperous modern city featuring many museums, art galleries, restaurants, theatres and shops located only 20 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico.
Your program fee includes visits to both private and public clinics as well as hospitals in Merida. Also included are trips to Archaeological sites such as Uxmal, Chichen Itza, Tulum and natural wonders such as cenotes. In addition to the healthcare focus, experience life on the Yucatan Peninsula and the Caribbean through two weekend trips outside Merida.
