Description

The farm house and chapel were designed by the famed Portuguese architect Raul Lino in 1922, in the graceful architectural style that was Portugal's answer to French "Art Deco": granite offset by white-washed walls, red-tiled roofs, burgundy windows and doors, stone-walled rooms, and hand-painted tiles ("azulejos").

Inside the house, the rooms are decorated with antique furniture. Comfortable beds, books, magazines, and winter's central heating add to an atmosphere of restfulness and ease.

Breakfast is special at Casa da Levada, complete with homemade breads and jams; it can be served in the terrace in summer or in the dining room, a friendly room that often fosters conversations among guests and family.

Cooking lessons are available at Casa da Levada, and Ana Maria -- the family's cook -- will cook your favourite dish upon request. Special meals can be served on the terrace or in the old kitchen with its old-fashioned wood-burning oven.

During your stay we recommend a visit to the famous Casa de Mateus, a masterpiece of Portuguese Baroque architecture with elegant gardens, just five minutes by car from Casa da Levada. Additionally, from June to September to each year, the Casa de Mateus Foundation organises an International Music Festival with over 40 major concerts, from Baroque to Classical Music to jazz.

Tras-os-Montes is a hilly region of natural beauty, steeped in its rural traditions, and with easy access to three Nature Parks, fantastic walks and bathing in a lovely natural waterfall. You can visit the breathtaking Douro Valley by boat or travelling by train along the unique narrow train lines. Last but not least, the region boasts a rich tradition of gastronomy and excellent Port and Douro wines.

Location

The "Casa Agrícola da Levada" is just 2 Kms off Vila Real's downtown, in the heart of the Trás-os-Montes Region and at one of the extremities of the Port Wine Special Region.

From Oporto, take the A4 to Amarante followed by the IP4 until you reach the Vila Real Norte exit.

Take left to Vila Real Centro and then again left, on the roundabout near to the army facilities, towards MATEUS/ SABROSA. on the second road to the left, you'll find the directions to: CASA AGRÍCOLA DA LEVADA/ TURISMO DE HABITAÇÃO.
