This international volunteer project is organized in Zanzibar under the theme Girl Child Education and Youth empowerment. The volunteers will be involved in teaching English language to the young people in the community, especially those who are coming from disadvantaged families. English language will help them to access further studies or employment in the tourism sector which is growing in Zanzibar, hence empower them to fight poverty. The project is encouraging more young girls to take part since they have been behind due to the cultural and traditional practices.
Other activities will include organizing sports and games for children in the local primary schools. This is an activity which will take place after school hours. The sports can be football, volleyballs, netball and other games and sports which kids and other young people can learn. The idea of this activity is to bring together young girls and boys to promote the sense of equality among boys and girls. Volunteers can organize other activities with the aim of promoting these ideas.
The volunteers will be also involved in painting school classrooms so as to create a better atmosphere for the children who study in the school.
On arrival, the volunteers will receive one day orientation, getting familiar with the culture of the community, understanding various program policies, sharing fears and expectations, team building activities, etc.
Cultural exchange: Each country or culture presented in the project will have an opportunity to do a presentation. Volunteers are encouraged to be prepared beforehand to present their countries and cultures. Depending on the interest of the participants, the presentation can be in the form of songs, drama, dance, storytelling, speech, etc. Make it more creative and more fun!
Excursions have always been an exciting activity in the project. During the week and on weekends, the volunteers will be involved in a wide range of outdoor pursuits for fun and recreation. Most of the activities will be organized in collaboration with local youth. Possibilities are a day visit to Jozani National Park, beach swimming, spice tour, visiting historical sites including Stone Town, slave market and museums, snorkeling and swimming with dolphins at Kamikazi Beach.
