The international volunteer project takes place in Mtwara Region, Southeastern part of Tanzania along the Indian Ocean coast, and has as a main objective the Coast environmental conservation. What makes this project special is the location, type of work and diversity of the volunteers expected to participate from the neighboring countries Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda, who will join the rest of the volunteers coming from North America, Europe and Asia.
This will be the most dynamic activity which will bring the true meaning of labour, cooperation and achievements. Volunteers will participate in conservation of the coastal environment including planting and taking care of the mangrove trees along the Indian Ocean coast. Other activities will revolve around the protection of marine wildlife.
Additionally, the volunteers will be teaching, organizing sports, games, arts and crafts for children in the local primary schools focusing on environmental education.
On arrival, the volunteers will receive one day orientation, getting familiar with the culture of the community, understanding various program policies, sharing fears and expectations, team building activities, etc.
The area of focus during this project will be Environmental Sustainability. Volunteers will have an opportunity to discuss and share opinions on Millennium development goal number 7, and what can be done from the individual, community, on national and international level to bring positive change. You are kindly requested to study and obtain some information from your home country regarding the realization of Millennium development goals, in particular on Environmental sustainability.
Excursions have always been an exciting activity in the project. During the week and on weekends, the volunteers will get involved in a wide range of outdoor pursuits for fun and recreation. Possibilities are to visit Selous National Park, one the biggest in Tanzania, experience typical Tanzanian coastal culture, history and the beauty of the region through excursions to Mikindani, Msanga Mkuu Peninsula, and the famous Slave market in Mtwara.
Each country or culture presented in the project will have an opportunity to do a presentation. Volunteers are encouraged to be prepared beforehand to present their countries and cultures. Depending on the interest of the participants, the presentation can be in the form of songs, drama, dance, storytelling, speech, etc. Make it more creative and more fun!
