  • Description

    The main objective of the international volunteer project is Adult Education. The international volunteer project will be held in Embu District for 3 weeks. Volunteers will come together to demonstrate the power of voluntary service in meeting critical needs of the local communities.

    As part of the Adult Education program, the volunteers will be teaching adults reading, writing and numerical skills. The program is initiated by adult education department under social services and the aim is to raise the literacy level in this area. The group will be involved with the adult education activities in the afternoon hours. In the morning, the volunteers will be counseling and playing with children.

    The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.
    All volunteers will first meet in Nairobi for orientation.

    Embu is located in the Eastern province, about 140 km away from Nairobi. The project site is located in Manyatta, about 30 minutes drive from Embu town. Public transport is available. The closest Hospital is 5 minutes walk. Markets, Post Office, Banks (ATMs), Internet and other facilities are located in Embu town.

    There is an extra fee of 250 Euros for participation in this project, intended to support the local hosting organization.

  • Highlights

    In the free time the volunteers can visit Keremeri Forest, Thenge Njeru Waterfall, and community members' homes.

    There will be cultural presentations where all the volunteers will have an opportunity to present their countries and cultures. Volunteers will be free to choose presentation methods like story telling, singing, dancing, drama, speeches, etc.

  • Qualifications

    No particular expertise or skills required. Participants should have a positive attitude, be ready to adopt and enjoy simple living conditions, be flexible and patient. However, specialized skills and expertise (such as experience in teaching adults how to read, write and calculate, and life skills) will be used accordingly. We strongly encourage people 50 and over to participate in this project.
