  • Description

The Bucerius Summer Program in Mediation is a highly interactive program for law students and recent graduates. Through four mandatory courses, you learn how companies manage conflicts systematically and how conflict resolution projects are designed and implemented. Experienced practitioners and academics explain recent findings and the theoretical background of the topics discussed. Group and individual exercises, role plays and mock-mediations are core elements of the coursework and are guided by professional mediators. Their direct feedback and qualified input help you hone your advocacy and problem-solving skills.

  • Highlights

The focus of the 2012 program is on Business-to-Business (B2B) Mediation, which is addressed in four courses. The courses were carefully selected to complement and build upon each other, so all four courses are mandatory.

    * Claim Management by Dr. Alexander Steinbrecher (Legal Counsel, Bombardier Transportation, Germany),
    * Effective Representation in Mediation by Claudia Bernard (US Court of Appeals and Hastings College of the Law, USA) and Howard Herman (US District Court of California and Hastings College of the Law, USA),
    * The Legal Framework of Mediation by Professor Nadja Alexander (Mediator, Hong Kong Shue Yan University, China),
    * The Psychological Foundations of Conflict Resolution by Dr. Jo Beatrix Aschenbrenner (Vice Director, Center on the Legal Profession, Bucerius Law School and Hanefeld Rechtsanwälte, Germany).

Courses are taught by experienced professors and practitioners, with special coaching visits from professional mediators. The small but diverse study body (around 20-25 students) allows for close contact and personal feedback while also expanding your international network.

The program takes place on the quaint Bucerius campus in the center of the beautiful harbor city of Hamburg - Germany's second largest city and Europe's "green" capital of 2011. Outside of the classroom, you are invited to partake in an array of extracurricular activities to learn more about German history and culture and to become familiar with your new surroundings. Activities include city tours, museum visits, excursions to nearby cities, etc.
