Madrid, the lively and sophisticated capital of Spain, hosts Binghamton's summer study abroad program during the month of July. The broad purposes of this program are to provide intensive language instruction at all levels form beginning through advanced and immersion in Spanish culture. There are advanced courses in literature and history. All the cultural resources of Madrid contribute to the experience. Students live in a centrally located Spanish residence hall, the Colegio Mayor Mara. An organized long weekend excursion to one of Spain's other regions is optional. The program culminates with a weekend in Paris.
Eligibility Requirements: 2.5 GPA, undergraduate and graduate student applications welcome.
Binghamton University works with Foreign Study Program (FORSPRO), a non-profit organization based in Florida that organizes the courses, makes the living arrangements, and plans excursions. Some of the courses include field trips as an intrinsic part of the instruction, and all courses take advantage of the Spanish history and culture that students experience through organized activities or simply from the daily life in Madrid.
Each course consists of 15 sessions for 3 hours for a total of 45 contact hours. Language courses are limited in size to 18 students each. All courses are offered in Spanish unless otherwise noted. In selecting courses, students should be flexible in case a course is canceled for insufficient enrollment.
