Austria, with its scenic grandeur and warm hospitality, has welcomed the Binghamton University study abroad program in German and Austrian Studies for over twenty-five years. The historic city of Graz, a crossroad between Eastern and Western Europe, provides an interesting and friendly environment for the program. The program at Karl-Franzens University is particularly geared for students who have completed two years of college level German or the equivalent, and wish to perfect their German language skills and take courses in Germanic Literatures, Austrian history and culture, international relations, and other liberal arts subjects. Regular university courses are available for students with sufficient German, including anthropology, archeology, computer science, earth sciences, ecology, humanities, information technology, linguistics, math, natural and physical sciences, philosophy, religion and social sciences. Participants may request placement in mini-internships.
Eligibility Requirements: Sophomores & above; 4 semesters of college-level German.
The University of Graz (founded in 1587) hosts the Binghamton program. Home to six nobel laureates and such distinguished scholars as Alfred Wegner, creator of the theory of continental drift, the University is proud of its academic tradition and responsiveness to issues of the contemporary world. There are some 30,000 students. The fall semester, the program is organized around a modular core curriculum taught in German by Graz faculty members expressly for the students on the program. Access to regular university courses is available, although these courses may be difficult during the fall semester unless one's language proficiency is high.
