  • Description

    Beyond Travel's Global Action and Awareness volunteers work directly with BT Partners and community based organizations on ongoing efforts to protect the environment, maintain food security, improve access to medicine, and promote education and economic opportunity for women and youth.

    The massive earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010 caused much devastation and further heightened the vulnerability of the Haitian people to other hazards: hurricanes, disease, malnutrition, and abject poverty. Beyond Travel has mobilized to rally the skills, talents, and compassion of people willing to become overseas volunteers to lend their support to community led reconstruction and recovery efforts.

    There are volunteer opportunities in four program areas:
    * Health
    * Education/Youth
    * Agriculture/Rural Development
    * Community/Economic Development

    Volunteers can work in three different locations: Port-au-Prince, Jacmel, and Petit-Goave, all in the southern part of Haiti.

    In Port-au-Prince, there are opportunities to work with youth groups to run educational activities that supplement regular school curricula, assist with organizing income generating activities for youth and planning psychosocial activities.

    In Jacmel and Petit Goave, volunteers may work with farmer's associations teach elementary school students, train teachers and other rural professionals, conduct health outreach, and work with other community groups based on need.

    In Port-au-Prince, volunteers will stay in a guest center and in Jacmel and Petit Goave they may stay at a local school, parish and or with a family. Volunteers can start at any time, but must have completed all necessary application requirements at least eight weeks prior to arrival. There are opportunities for longer term volunteers as well, but these volunteers are determined on a case by case basis based on background, skills and need.
